- director:
- Ousmane Sembene

Sembene’s first feature film made a profound impression at several international film festivals in 1966, and the evolution of African Cinema can be dated from this point. The heroine of the story, Diovanne, is a Senegalese maid taken to the Riviera by her French employers. It is only when she is out of Africa that she realizes what being an African means: it means being a thing, no longer Diovanne but “the black girl.” In French with English subtitles.
