Walkabout is a stunningly beautiful film about two children left stranded in the Australian outback, and an Aborigine boy on his coming-of-age “walkabout” who guides them on their journey back to civilization. The shots of the Australian wilderness are gorgeous, and the film’s exploration of the complicated relationship between the aboriginal culture and anglo Australian culture is honest and fascinating. The film attained cult status throughout the 70s and early 80s, but good prints have not been available for the past fifteen years. Director Roeg personally supervised the color-timing of new 35mm prints in addition to reinstating five minutes previously unseen in this country. “An unusual and unsettling film dazzlingly photographed. Takes us through a strikingly primitive world, never before seen on film, giving the film mystery and a certain eeriness. The sights are rare and so is the film” (Hollis Alpert, Saturday Review).
